Hair loss can be aggravated by other conditions.
Iron deficiency can make hair loss worse and is fairly common in vegetarians and women. Iron deficiency is not a diagnosis by itself and the cause must be found. Correcting iron deficiency can slow down the progression of hair loss but is not likely to cause a major improvement in your hair.
Severe malnutrition and protein deficiency can also contribute to hair loss but hair loss would be the least of your worries.
Thyroid disease can aggravate hair loss. Hair loss can occur with either an underactive thyroid or an overactive thyroid.
Elevated Hormones can speed up hair loss. Women who take anabolic steroids for body-building often notice accelerated hair loss. Some women will experience hair loss related to the hormone changes related to pregnancy or with oral contraceptives.
Some women have elevated Androgens produced by their ovaries or adrenal glands. They often have other signs such as: increased facial hair requiring electrolysis, waxing or laser treatment; a rash between their eyes, around their nose or mouth called Seborrhea; severe cystic acne; irregular menstrual periods; or cysts on their ovaries. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is the most common condition that causes elevated androgen levels and often causes trouble with hair loss, fertility, weight gain, or excessive facial hair and it is associated with a higher risk of developing Type II Diabetes.
There are other medical treatments available for women with elevated Androgens.
